Peers, Beers and Webinars - Oh My!

Posted Aug 27, 2014 in MTUG News.

The MTUG Board is proud to announce two new meeting formats for the 2014-15 season: all-online Tech Webinars and "Peers and Beers" networking events.

MTUG goes after-hours and online!

"Peers and Beers" -- networking with a little technology

Join MTUG for our first two "Peers and Beers" events, where IT profesionnals can socialize and network with their peers. Our goal for these events is to bring them to various regions of the state:

  • Portland - Wed 9/10/14, 4:30pm-6:30pm - Rivalries, 10 Cotton Street.
  • Bangor - Wed 9/17/14, 4:30pm-6:30pm - Seasons, 427 Main Street.

Both events will feature a brief presentation about VGo and Telepresence Innovation, and will spotlight MTUG's new series of webinars.

MTUG Educational Webinars

Starting in October, MTUG's educational sessions -- the heart of our mission -- will be completely online with our webinar series.  Held 1-2 times per month, each session will be 45-90 minutes in length with time for Q&A at the end.

Our first four webinars will touch on these subjects:

  • Security Overview - Wed 10/1/14 at 1pm. A great chance for small businesses to get an idea of their whole information security picture. Our presenters will give a birds-eye view of the considerations and processes to securing your important data. We will return to the topic of security in more detail for several of this season's webinars.
  • Security in the Cloud - Wed 10/15/14 at 1pm. One of several sessions that will focus in on specific security realms of concern -- here, we look at the unique exposures when working with cloud services.
  • Community Broadband Planning - Wed 11/12/14 at 1pm. A step away from our security focus, in this session we want to shine light on the steps communities can take to make sure residents and businesses have the connectivity needed to help them thrive.
  • "Don't Gift Your Data for Xmas!" - Wed 12/10/14 at 1pm. A return to our security theme, we focus on data access vulnerabilities.

Our hope with going all-online with our educational programming is to:

  • Bring high quality information to audiences all over the state
  • Bring geographically-diverse expertise to join in on our discussion
  • Moderate webinars with MTUG's strong end-user focus - each webinar will be attended by multiple MTUG board members and representatives to help focus the discussion. Our model will be designed for open interaction, even among webinar participants, and audiences will be encouraged to interact with presenters.
